TAKING ON TRIBAL!

I am currently researching traditional Tribal and ethnic jewellery, for a new collection... I used to pass off modern repro "tribal style" jewellery in general, thinking it a bit too hippyish for my personal taste, but on reflection I am loving the extravagance of the bead-work, colours, gold embelishments and sheer SIZE of some of the head-dress and jewellery pieces I've seen, not to mention the natural beauty and poise exuding from some of the North African women featured in these portraits! (All of which I found at VINTAGE EVERYDAY's blog) Like these...

BUG IN THE HOOD!

Doc called me into the living room today, to show me the youngest tagger I've seen yet! This kid was about six years old, and had some fat chalk! After writing her statement (seemingly a protest or warning about some guys jarg taste, or lack of eye for a bargain) she ran away, then came back and went over it again in a different colour! By which time I had stopped laughing enough to grab my camera!
I love my neighbourhood!

CAIN CASER!

Currently loving London artist, Cain Caser's crazy-bright graffiti-inspired paintings! They have a distinct figurative portrait quality, like mental drug-monster-faces done up for a night in a wild gay bar... or something! I LOVE! Take a look at Cain's Flickr

RETURN OF THE LITTLE PEOPLE!

Last year to celebrate the launch of my Lilliputians Earings, I blogged about the amazing Little People photography of SLINKACHU! Since then, I've noticed a lot of greetings cards with these similar set-ups, usually involving food and domestic objects, and assumed they were by the same artist, but they aren't! These works (which definitely have their own distinctive quality and framing style - closer-up to the subject, less grit and slightly less humour-based, with a heavier design aesthetic) are by French photographer, Vincent Bousserez (whose website I would link, but it's currently not working!...Google him!)
I love them!

RED-BEAN BUNNY BUNS!

So yesterday at the show, I talked snacks with Becky J and Even, and he reccomended some very intriguing chinese deserts. Today I went to the chinese supermarket and sought out the bunny rabbit buns he described. They were only £1.65 and there's ten in a packet! Steamed some up tonight for the house-boys! They're like soft white bread-dough with a big slap of rich subtly-sweet red bean paste in the center. Gorgeous! Try some!

LOST PROPERTIES!

Gia was playing an improv set with some of our friends tonight at the exhibition we still hadn't gotten out to see. Amazing space, and loads of great work! Tomo and Even continue to be ridiculously good at dry-humoured street-art, with immense painting skill, and Laura Spark's animation has come on tenfold since I last saw it, with a beautiful and skillfully made piece starring some wire-framed rabbit characters in a forest!
The improv sets went amazingly well too. Some very nice moments. I got thrust with a camera and asked to film, so hoping I actuallu managed to press record! ;-)

BUG POP BUTCHER-MAN!

Had the wierdest dream lastnight, about a fat mustaschio man in a white apron, spattered with blood. THE BUG POP BUTCHER! Haha! He was horrible! He didn't really do anything, I mean it was one of those dreams where nothing happens... but things just...are. Glad to be awake! Have sent this pic to the Dream Police! ;-)

THE TERRIFIC TEDDY GIRLS!

Late 1940's youth culture movement, the "Teddy Girls", were a lesser-acknowledged element of the tough and iconic "Teddy Boy" movement. Apparently the basis of the scene came from huge gangs of working class Londoners and Irish immigrants. Culturally, they took the tom-boy look to extreme levels, given the female ideal of the time. With the same slicked back quiffs and broad shouldered jackets as the boys, these chicks were considered terrifying to the average 1950's girl-next-door! Here's two of Ken Russel's stunning photographs of girls from the movement, which was little documented elsewhere. And also look out for an Autumn/Winter collection from BUG POP, taking a lot of inspiration!
